MITSUBISHI CORPORATION GRANTS SCHOLARSHIP TO SELECTED UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI BRUNEI STUDENTS

27 September 2021 – Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Mitsubishi Corporation (MC) to provide financial support in the form of scholarship to selected undergraduate students who are currently studying at UTB.

In light of the COVID-19 outbreak, the virtual signing event was hosted by UTB via video conference.

Present virtually as the Guest of Honour was Yang Mulia Dr. Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education (MOE).

Also present at the virtual event were Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, UTB Vice-Chancellor; Yang Mulia Mr. Tadashi Hara, Country Representative, Brunei Liaison Office of Mitsubishi Corporation; Yang Mulia Dr. Chin Wei Keh, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education); representative from the Embassy of Japan and officers from MOE, UTB, and MC.

Signing the MoU on behalf of UTB was the Vice-Chancellor, Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman; and representing Mitsubishi Corporation was Yang Mulia Ms. Noriko Iizuka, International CSR Team Leader, Corporate Sustainability & CSR Department. At the event, Ms. Noriko Iizuka was represented by Yang Mulia Mr. Tadashi Hara, Country Representative, Brunei Liaison Office of Mitsubishi Corporation; who signed in the presence of the Guest of Honour.

Prior to the signing, the event began with welcoming remarks by the Vice-Chancellor of UTB and Country Representative from Brunei Liaison Office of Mitsubishi Corporation. The signing then proceeded with the presentation of the mock cheque.

Delivering her remarks, Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah expressed her appreciation to Mitsubishi Corporation for selecting UTB as the recipient of the Mitsubishi International Scholarships Program. She mentioned that this scholarship collaboration is another great example on how university and industry can collaborate for mutual benefits, Mitsubishi contributes to the development of talented workforce and the University benefits from students who are motivated to be the best they can be.

Mr. Tadashi Hara, in his remarks, said, “This International Scholarship is to foster human resources for the development of home country and the global society in the future. This could be considered as a part of our support that will contribute to Brunei Vision 2035.”

Under the MoU, Mitsubishi Corporation will fund scholarships to selected five most deserving full-time undergraduate students at the university. The scholarship with the total amount of BND $10,000 will be shared among the students and awarded as a tuition fee that covers one year of the 2021/2022 academic session.

The recipients consisting of first year to final year students were selected based on criterias mutually agreed by both parties which include students’ financial background, academic performance and extracurricular activities. The scholarship is also hoped to enhance the learning effectiveness of the recipients.
