16 June 2021 – His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince, Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office and the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), consented to grace the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021 Ceremony held today at the Plenary Hall, International Convention Centre (ICC).
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was greeted upon arrival by Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Dato Dr. Awang Haji Mat Suny bin Hj Md Hussein, Minister of Energy; Yang Mulia Datin Seri Paduka Dr. Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh, Acting Minister of Education; Yang Mulia Professor Dr Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB; and Yang Mulia Dayang Hajah Farida binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Talib, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad.
The ceremony began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Paduka Seri Utama Dato Paduka Seri Setia Haji Awang Salim bin Hj Besar.
The Vice-Chancellor of UTB and Chairperson of the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021 delivered the welcoming speech. This was then followed by a multimedia presentation and the activation of the CIPTA trophy mechanism.
The biennial competition, which was inaugurated in 2005, was organised by UTB with Brunei LNG Sendirian Berhad as partner and sponsor. CIPTA is an acronym for ‘Creative, Innovative Product and Technological Advancement’. The objectives of the Competition are: to inspire the youth and public to develop creative products, processes or technology for national aspirations; to encourage inventions and innovations; to recognise and award creative talents; to encourage research and development; to promote manufacturing processes and technological product development; to embed the culture of science, engineering and technology to the youth and public in Brunei Darussalam; and to foster collaborative linkages within Brunei Darussalam and ASEAN region.
Yang Mulia Pengiran Dr Rafidah binti Pengiran Haji Petra, Co-Head of the Technical Committee presented a summary of the Chief Adjudicator’s overall appraisal of the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021 entries followed by the announcement of the winning projects.
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince, who is also the Patron of the competition consented to present cheques, trophies and certificates to the winners and recipients of consolation prizes in Categories 1, 2, 3, Smart Junior Competition, and ASEAN Category.
His Royal Highness the Crown Prince later consented to receive a Pesambah from the Organising Committee of the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021, presented by the Vice-Chancellor, Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman.
Before leaving the Ceremony, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince consented to interact with the winners who exhibited their inventions.
In conjunction with the Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021, the CIPTA 2021 Seminar Series will take place at the Main Conference Hall, ICC starting from Friday, 18 June 2021 until 20 June 2021. The three-day Seminar Series will include CIPTA 2021 Executive Seminar with the theme: Innovations for Society 5.0; Sharing Sessions by Winners with the theme: Spreading the Winning Vibes, where the winners will share their experience along the invention journey; and CIPTA 2021 Forum with the theme: Driving the Innovation Ecosystem.
The Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021 is the ninth CIPTA competition, themed ‘Innovations for Society 5.0’. The theme emphasises on multi-dimensional technological innovations to reach out to the needs of the global society, by addressing the 17 key elements of Sustainable Development Goals.
There are six categories in Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2021, which are the Local Category 1: Creating New Product, Process or Technology; Local Category 2: Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology; Local Category 3: Creating New or Modifying Existing Product, Process or Technology by Young Inventors; the Smart Junior Competition; ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category and ASEAN Young Inventor Category.
Meanwhile, winners from the Local Categories in Category 1 and Category 2, and ASEAN New Invention & Innovation Category are eligible to compete for the Crown Prince Special Award.
Winning projects will also be showcased at the UTB Gallery from 21 June 2021. Members of the public are welcome to attend the CIPTA 2021 Seminar Series and visit the showcase.
