3 December 2020 – According to the report by Quacquarelli Symonds Asian University Rankings (QSAUR), Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) performed particularly well in the International Faculty, standing at number 1 regionally – the strongest indicator for UTB. This shows UTB embraces diversity and shared differences among educators as this index is simply based on the proportion of faculty members that are international. It is a proxy measure for how internationally attractive the university is to academic staff around the world.
In the latest QSAUR 2021 edition, UTB has clinched the 128th position and among the top 20% universities, up to nine places from its previous position at 137. A total of 634 institutions were listed in the ranking this year with 93 new entrants. Other key indicators that have improved its scores and positions from last year are Academic Reputation, Employer Reputation, Faculty Student, Staff with PhD, Citations per Paper and Papers per Faculty. Since its first debut in 2018, UTB has gained a total of 37 places over the 4 consecutive years. UTB is now comfortably above well-established Universities such as University of Seoul, Korea (129), Universiti Malaysia Pahang (133), Tokyo University of Science, Japan (137), East China University of Science and Technology, China (144), Kasetsart University, Thailand (149), University of Engineering & Technology Lahore, India (175), and others.
The ranking highlights the top universities in Asia annually since 2009. The methodology used to create the ranking is similar to that used for QS World University Rankings (QSWUR), but also considers a set of performance metrics carefully tailored for the region.
With its noteworthy performance, UTB is now on track in positioning itself as a university of international caliber and attract talented students and scholars from the country and internationally. These encouraging developments will also provide further impetus for the University to strive towards accomplishing its vision to become ‘A Global University Impacting Society’.
Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, UTB Vice-Chancellor is very pleased with the achievement and said that Alhamdulillah, she is very grateful to His Majesty for his strong leadership, vision and continuous support in the development and progression of the university.
The Vice-Chancellor also adds that UTB’s achievement today is due to the commitment and hardwork of its staff and students. At a very young age, UTB has achieved multiple significant milestones and proud to be in the same league with other renowned universities by being rated Five Star University by QS. This achievement follows an equally remarkable accomplishment in June this year where UTB was ranked at 350 globally based on the QSWUR 2021. It has also ranked UTB at the 40th place for Young Global University under 50 years of age.
UTB’s participation in the QSAUR provides a benchmark for the University’s progress against other international Universities in Asia. This achievement also serves as recognition of UTB’s ability to make a positive impact and significant difference in higher education in Asia.
