INDIA OFFERS FELLOWSHIPS TO SCHOLARS IN BRUNEI

12 October 2019 – The High Commission of India and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, India conducted a talk at the Lecture Theatre 2, Library Complex, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). UTB, The High Commission of India and the IIT, Madras, India hosted the talk.

The event commenced with welcoming speeches from the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research), Professor Dr. Mohamed Hasnain Isa and the Counsellor from High Commission of India, Mr. Ravi Chandar. Also in attendance were UTB Principal Officers; staff and graduates from UTB, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA).

Dr. Sachin Gunthe, Associate Professor; and Mrs. Kavitha Rudrappa, International Relations from IIT Madras, Chennai, introduced about India’s foremost technical education centres, the internationally renowned Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

India is offering 1000 fellowships to scholars from ASEAN member countries including universities in Brunei in pursuing integrated PhD programmes at any of the 23 IITs in India namely IIT Kharagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Kanpur, IIT Delhi, IIT Guwahati, IIT Roorkee, IIT Ropar, IIT Bhubaneswar, IIT Gandhinagar, IIT Hyderabad, IIT Jodhpur, IIT Patna, IIT Indore, IIT Mandi, IIT (BHU) Varanasi, IIT Palakkad, IIT Tirupati, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, IIT Bhilai, IIT Goa, IIT Jammu, IIT Dharwad and IIT Madras.

The fellowship programme is funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India. The funding covers the entire cost of study and living expenses for up to 5 years of their PhD programme.

The talk aimed to share information about the fellowship programmes and meet with eligible students in Brunei. The programme is exclusively for aspirants from ASEAN countries including Brunei. The programme was announced by the Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, in January 2018 in New Delhi during the Commemorative Summit to mark 25 years of ASEAN-Inida Partnership and was launched on 16 September 2019.
