19 August 2019 – The Electrical and Electronic Engineering programme from Faculty of Engineering hosted a talk on ‘Cloud-based Evolutionary Optimisation of Cyber-Physical Systems’ at the campus.

About 20 attendees comprising of lecturers and students from UTB were present at the talk which was conducted by Dr. Leandro Soares Indrusiak, from Real Time System Group and a faculty member of Department of Computer Science, University of York, United Kingdom. His current research topics include real-time systems and networks, distributed embedded systems, on-chip multiprocessing, energy-efficient computing, cyber-physical systems, cloud and high-performance, and several types of resource allocation problems.

Dr. Leandro focused on the application of an evolutionary algorithm which is to repeatedly uncover improved solutions to an optimisation problem that is known as Evolutionary optimisation. This type of algorithm is heuristic in nature, meaning that there is no guarantee that it will ever find an optimal solution, or that it will identify the solution as optimal if it is found. Nevertheless, this approach is commonly used in multiple optimisation problems in science and engineering, where a decent fit solution is acceptable despite being sub-optimal.

The speaker discussed how evolutionary optimisation has been used to improve real-time performance and energy-efficiency of different types of cyber-physical systems such as autonomous vehicles and smart factories. It also touched on research achievements that enabled optimisation which includes the creation of fast and accurate fitness functions and the distribution and orchestration of the evolutionary algorithm over cloud environments.
