PUBLIC TALK AT UTB: LIVING IN AN ABSTRACT STATE

10 MARCH 2018 – A talk on ‘Living in an Abstract State: How Computer Scientists Solve Problems’ by Dr Troy Vasiga from the University of Waterloo, Canada was held today at the Lecture Theatre 2, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The talk was hosted by Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), and UTB in cooperation with the High Commission of Canada to Brunei Darussalam.

In the presentation, Dr Troy Vasiga discussed the powerful concepts of a state machine, and how it is simple enough to easily model the simplest processes and yet is powerful enough to model the most complex machines ever constructed.

The lecture was attended by Professor Dr. Zuruzi Abu Samah, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research), as the Guest of Honour, and was also attended by principal officers, lecturers, staff and students of the Universities.

Dr Troy Vasiga is a lecturer at the Cheriton School of Computer Science, and a member of the Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing at the University of Waterloo, Canada. He is also the organiser of the Canadian Computing Competition and was the chair of the 2010 IOI (International Olympiad in Informatics), and a coach at the University of Waterloo ACM International Collegiate Programming Contests Team. He received the Faculty of Mathematics Award for Distinction in Teaching in 2009, and is a Senior Member of the ACM.
