29 July 2017 - Some 450 new Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) students were yesterday enlightened on the dangers of technology and social media by deputy public prosecutors from the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers.

The briefing, titled ‘Cybercrime and Risks and Dangers of Social Media,’ was held in conjunction with UTB’s Orientation Week 2017.

Delivered by Deputy Public Prosecutors Dayangku Hazirah binti Pengiran Mohd Yusof and Kamaliah Fadhilah binti Haji Ibrahim, the briefing covered a variety of issues associated with the use of social media such as cyberbullying, hacking, online scamming and cyberstalking.

One of the common trends highlighted by the speakers is the spreading of false information via online social media platforms such as WhatsApp or Facebook.

“The sharing of unverified information may often seem harmless but, in reality, can have a harmful effect on a person’s (the victim’s) life,” noted the speakers.

They also informed the audience that a number of cybercrime cases that had occurred in Brunei Darussalam involved the spreading of false information about others.

The speakers further conveyed to the audience the key message of ‘Think before you post,’ advising them to use online forums and social media responsibly and for positive purposes.

The briefing, held at UTB’s Multi-Purpose Hall, ended with the presentation of tokens of appreciation to the speakers.

Schools and educational institutions interested to hold suchtalks are invited to contact the Criminal Justice Division of the Attorney General’s Chambers. Requests for such talks should be addressed to the Criminal Justice Division, Attorney General’s Chambers, the Law and Courts Building, Jalan Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Hajah Saleha, Bandar Seri Begawan BA 1910, Brunei Darussalam.
