UTB Holds the 2nd Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (CIIS) Conference
The second Computational Intelligence in Information Systems (CIIS) Conference was officially opened today by Dr Awang Haji Junaidi Bin Haji Abdul Rahman, Permanent Secretary (Higher Education), Ministry of Education at Lecture Theatre 2, Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). Also present was Professor Dr. Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, Vice-Chancellor of UTB and Honorary Chair & Advisor of the Conference. The three-day conference themed ‘Improving Quality of Life Through Connectivity’ is organized by the School of Computing and Informatics, UTB from 18 to 20 November 2016.
Dr Au Thien Wan, Dean of School of Computing & Informatics as Chairman of the Conference said at the opening ceremony that “The Conference will be a platform for us to understand better these technologies, and their applications so that we can use them to address the complex issues faced by the modern societies today. We hope that these technologies will not only empower us to help us shape and build a better future but improve the quality of our lives through global connectivity.”
The Guest of Honour also delivered his speech and officiated the opening of CIIS. Following the opening ceremony, the keynote paper entitled ‘Artificial Intelligent (AI) Systems with Human Internal State Understanding: I know Who You Are and What You Think’ was presented by Professor Dr Soo Young Lee, from the Korea Advanced Institute of science and Technology, Korea.
In this talk, Professor Lee first gave an introduction to Deep Learning, the currently-successful AI on speech and image recognition based on computational models of human auditory and visual pathways. He also discussed natural language processing as the next higher cognitive function. He went on to explain on higher cognitive functions such as situation understanding and decision making, and presented continuing efforts to understand unpresented human mind, which may reside at the internal states of neural networks in the human brain. Special emphasis was given to human memory, trustworthiness, and sympathy to others during interactions.
There were 62 submissions from 21 countries, and after rigorous double-blind peer review process, 26 papers were accepted for the conference, and published by Springer in the Advances in Intelligent Systems and Computing book series. The papers are categorised into four main tracks: Intelligent Systems and their Applications; Internetworking, Security and Internet of Things; Data Mining and its Applications; and Management Information Systems & Education Technology. The papers will be presented across six sessions.
The CIIS conference also featured two invited academic speakers, Professor Laszlo T. Koczy from Budapest University of Technology and Economics, Hungary, presenting ‘Fuzzy Signatures – Theory and Application’ and Professor Ali Selamat from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, presenting ‘Fuzzy Granular Computing Classifier with Particle Swarm Optimisation Learning Algorithms’ Industrial speakers from BAG Networks, CISCO, and Huawei also presented their papers.
The CIIS conference provides UTB an excellent opportunity to attract expertise and professionals from academia and industries from all over the world to come to Brunei Darussalam for sharing, networking and collaboration.
