UTB holds Debate Competition for Convocation Festival 2016
Another activity organized in conjunction with Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Convocation Festival 2016 is the ‘UTB Second Inter-faculty Debate Competition’. The finals of the competition were held today at the Lecture Theatre 2, Phase 3, UTB Campus. The competition was organised by the Student Representative Council (Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar UTB), Debate Society and the University’s English Club.
Present at the event was the Guest of Honour, Dr. Au Thien Wan, Acting Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic) and Dean of School of Computing and Informatics (SCI). Also present were the University’s Principal Officers, Lecturers, Staff and Students.
A total of five (5) teams from the Faculty of Engineering, UTB School of Business and School of Computing and Informatics competed in the competition. Team Mechanical Engineering and Team School of Computing and Informatics made it to the finals and competed for the Championship. The theme for this year’s Debate Championship is Industry, Community, and Technology.
The winner of the competition was Team Mechanical Engineering. The Guest of Honor, later presented the awards and certificates to the winners and participants.
The objective of the competition was to provide a significant training ground for the development of students’ communicative abilities through debating and discussions and to provide opportunities for students to practice and share their skills and knowledge. It was also hoped that the participants understand the importance of respecting different ideas and perspective.
The debate competition started with continuous workshops that include a Public Speaking workshop, and an Asian Parliamentary Debate Workshop. These workshops were intended to ready the participating teams before battling in the competition preliminaries.
