Crown Prince Officiates UTB’s Third Convocation Festival 2016

His Royal Highness Prince (Dr.) Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah ibni His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Crown Prince and Senior Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office, in his capacity as the Pro-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), this morning consented to officiate UTB’s Third Convocation Festival 2016.

Upon arrival at the Phase 3 Complex in UTB, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince was greeted by the Honourable Minister of Education and Chairman of UTB Council, Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, and Professor Dr. Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of UTB.

Also present at the Ceremony were members of the UTB Council, High Commissioners, Ambassadors and senior officials from the Ministry of Education.

The ceremony commenced with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat, led by Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Imam Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Abdul Hamid bin Bakal.

His Royal Highness then consented to deliver a Sabda launching UTB's Third Convocation Festival 2016, which was then followed by a Tausyeh performance and multimedia show. His Royal Highness then consented to tour the ‘XLR8 Exhibition’.

XLR8 (Experiential Learning Partnerships)’ is the theme for the Convocation Festival this year. The theme is based on the University’s mission to provide experiential learning, enhance research and foster partnerships. The acronym ‘XLR8’ is derived from the phrase ‘eXperiential LeaRning pArTnErships’ which is also pronounced ‘accelerate’. This signifies the University’s endeavour to ‘accelerate’ efforts to realize its vision to be amongst the best 10 universities for Engineering and Technology in Southeast Asia by 2018.

The XLR8 Exhibition consisted of four components: ‘The Journey’, ‘Strategic Partnerships’, ‘360° Graduate’, and ‘The Cycle’. ‘The Journey’ showcase consisted of two tunnels. The first tunnel depicted a brief history of UTB since its establishment thirty years ago in 1986, highlighting major milestones in academic and research developments, strengthening of partnerships, graduates preparation and infrastructure development. His Royal Highness the Crown Prince also consented to sign a plaque commemorating the launch of UTB’s 30th anniversary exhibition at the UTB Gallery. The second tunnel showcased initiatives to produce marketable graduates through the development of 21st century skills and the revamping of curriculum to meet the demands of the industry and stakeholders.

The second component of the XLR8 Exhibition was ‘Strategic Partnerships’, one of UTB’s strategic ambitions. UTB places an important emphasis in industry engagement in curriculum development, internship placement for UTB ExperiencePLUS, knowledge transfer and collaboration in community activities. UTB’s strategic partners that took part in the exhibition included Brunei Shell Petroleum Sdn Bhd, Piper Aircraft Inc., Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE), Amec Foster Wheeler and BIBD At-Tamwil. The Crown Prince CIPTA Award organised by UTB was also showcased in the exhibition.

The third component of the exhibition was ‘360° Graduate’, another strategic ambition of UTB. UTB believes that a well-rounded graduate who is socio-economically responsible and possesses strong MIB values can be developed through extra-curricular activities such as sports, leadership, competitions, religious and community-based activities. The exhibition showcased projects undertaken by students that demonstrate their ability to apply their knowledge, skills and abilities in different settings.

The last component of the exhibition was ‘The Cycle’. This component showcased the means in which graduates can remain involved and contribute to the University through the alumni association. The pro tem committee of the Alumni Association of UTB is currently active in attracting new members and planning activities to sustain the involvement of graduates in the University’s development. Another initiative that was showcased was the University’s efforts to sustain and boost interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) amongst school students through the ‘School Adoption Programme’.

After the tour of the exhibition, His Royal Highness consented for a photograph session with student representatives and also received a ‘Pesambah’ from the UTB Student Representative Council.

The Convocation Festival is held annually to celebrate students who have successfully completed their studies. A series events have been lined up in conjunction with the Festival that include Pop-Up Bazaar, Pop-Up Career Fair, Alumni Membership Drive, XLR8 Fun Cycle, Brunei’s Coolest Entrepreneurship Expo, XLR8 Fun Run & Cycle, Pop-Up Vendors in support of Bandarku Ceria, Majlis Khatam Al-Quran, UTB Debate Competition, UTB 30th Video Competition and White Canopy Café.

UTB Convocation 2016 will be held on Monday, 07 November 2016 at the Plenary Hall, International Convention Centre.
