UTB and Amec Foster Wheeler at QS WorldClass Seminar

Universiti Teknologi Brunei’s (UTB) Assistant Vice Chancellor (Academic) Pg Dr Hj Mohd Esa Al-Islam Pg Hj Md Yunus recently attended the ninth Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) WorldClass seminar held in Singapore.

The UTB Assistant Vice Chancellor, along with Amec Foster-Wheeler Asia Pacific Manager for Business Development Ravish Maqsood, spoke at the conference on increasing the employability of graduates through the ongoing UTB-Amec Foster Wheeler Partnership (formerly known as the ITB-Amec Foster Wheeler Partnership).

Under the partnership, Foster Wheeler annually hosts an oil and gas development training programme for UTB undergraduates.

In January, Maqsood said the multinational consultancy will be carrying out the programme for the third time this year.

Students who undergo the UTB-Amec Foster Wheeler Training Programme receive updated knowledge of the industry by learning practical approaches in addition to theory learnt at UTB and are also given opportunities to interact with experienced industry professionals.

To date, over 200 UTB students have completed the programme.

The ninth QS WorldClass seminar, which ran from April 4-6, convened university and industry leaders to discuss the ins and outs of education-business partnerships from a wide range of standpoints.

Among these were their effect on higher education traditions, practices and policies, their role in business productivity and competitiveness, their short and long-term impacts on the regions and strategies that make such partnerships work.

The semi-final round of the ODGC Science Showoff was held at the Multipurpose Hall of Universiti Teknologi Brunei on 14 April 2016.

A total of 10 teams made up of students and teachers were from seven different local schools: St George’s School, Tanjung Maya Secondary School, St Andrew’s School, St John’s School, Pengiran Anak Puteri (PAP) Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School, Pengiran Jaya Negara Pengiran Haji Abu Bakar Secondary School and Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College.

Each demonstrated a five-minute experiment that incorporated elements of performing arts.

From creating fire with pencil leads to mixing different solutions to create a rocket effect, every science show entertained the panel of judges made up of lecturers from UTB, Dr Somnuk and Jennifer Voon, as well as Australian Science Showoffs master Dr Graham Walker.

In an interview with The Brunei Times, Dr Walker said he and the other judges are looking into presence, energy and the participants’ passion for Science.

He added in order to be able to educate the audience, one has to add an element of playfulness to make a show more enjoyable.

When asked about the line-up by the schools, he said, “The performances were outstanding and well-presented.”

Voting for your favourite Science show ends today at 12pm. To vote and view short clips of the Science Showoffs by Dr Walker, follow competition organiser Oil and Gas Discovery Centre’s (OGDC) #ogdcbrunei on Instagram.

The top five contestants of the Science Show competition will be announced through organiser Oil and Gas Discovery Centre’s (OGDC) social media sites today at 3pm.

Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) Workshop

18 & 19 April 2016

Concourse, Universiti Teknologi Brunei

Twenty-seven academic staff from different programme areas attended a two-day Foundations of University Learning and Teaching (FULT) workshop on the fundamentals of learning and teaching held from 18-19 April 2016 at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB). The FULT workshop included 4 modules, namely: Learning at University and Good Communication Skills with Students; Curriculum Planning and Design; Assessment; and Effective Teaching Strategies. This is the fourth in a series of the professional development course coordinated by Centre for Communication, Teaching & Learning (CCTL) and is compulsory for all academic staff of UTB. This workshop was conducted as part of ITB’s strategic initiatives to enhance staff quality and promote innovative teaching practices.

The series of FULT workshop facilitator is Dr Peter Looker, Head of the Teaching, Learning and Pedagogy Division of Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. Dr Peter Looker in the workshop emphasised the crucial role of feedback in various areas such as student learning, course alignment, effective teaching strategies and the use of tutorial rooms that promote a more interactive learning. In addition, he underscored the importance of the teacher’s assessment task that ensures meaningful feedback to promote learning. Dr Peter Looker is a distinguished academic and has run similar training courses for more than a decade in many higher education institutions. One of his key recommendations was to encourage collaborative learning by reconfiguring traditional classrooms where students sit in rows and the teacher teaches mostly through lectures into tutorial rooms that are designed to engage students in learning in a technology-rich learning environment.

UTB regularly conducts teaching and learning workshops for the academic staff to enhance effective teaching learning methods in their classes. These sessions gives opportunity to the academic staff from different background to discuss the best method to deliver their classes so that effective teaching and learning takes place with the focus on the students.

21 April 2016 - A public lecture on “Spatial Analysis and Estimation of Petrophysical Properties by Professor Steve Tyson was held today at the Lecture Theatre 2, Universiti Teknologi Brunei. The public lecture was organised by the Faculty of Engineering, UTB.

Professor Steve Tyson is from University of Queensland, Australia has more than 30 years industry experience before moving to academia in 2013. He has worked in a range of subsurface roles, specialising in modelling, gridding, upscaling and spatial statistics. During this time he has developed a number of algorithms to improve model quality and quantify model uncertainty. Since 2013 Prof Steve has been the Chair of Subsurface Modelling in the Centre for Coal Seam Gas and the Director of the Centre for Geoscience Computing in the School of Earth Sciences, both at The University of Queensland. He oversees more than $3.5M of research projects in the geosciences covering geophysics, geostatistics, geology, uncertainty modelling and data analytics.

In his talk he discussed the existing geostatistics algorithms based on the kriging matrix that is shown to underestimate the connectivity of extreme values because they assume a linear spatial dependence model. Moreover, the estimation of uncertainty based on these techniques uses the kriging variance, which is not dependent on the values of the spatially distributed variable. It was also added that these uncertainty estimate are often implausible.

He also explained the reasons why most spatial variables in geoscience do not have a linear spatial dependence, even after monotonic transformations, and the impact of this in the estimation of petrophysical properties.

More recent techniques such as multiple-point statistics and non-linear geostatistics have been developed to overcome these limitations and each of these techniques has advantages and disadvantages were discussed. The talk offered the opportunity to consider new concepts in geostatistical thinking and determine their applicability to the petroleum industry.
