11 January 2021 – Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) welcomed twenty-one postgraduate students for the academic year 2021, January intake with an enlightening theoretical orientation at the Concourse Hall, UTB.
The one-day orientation was conducted to help the newcomers feel confident and comfortable starting their journey at the University. It is also to ensure the students develop a positive connection with their respective supervisor and lecturers at the university.
Present as the Guest of Honour at the orientation was Yang Mulia Professor Dr Mohamed Hasnain Isa, Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Research).
The event began with welcoming and congratulating the new students by Yang Mulia Dr Au Thien Wan, Dean of Graduate Studies and Research (GSR). The new intake is comprised of eleven PhD students and ten Master’s Degree students from all faculty, schools and centre.
In his remarks, Dr Au Thien Wan highlighted that UTB is one of the fastest growing university in terms of the increased number of graduate students and research. “In 2013, we only had 8 postgraduate students, and as of 2020, the current number of postgraduate students studying at UTB has grown to 245, constitutes nearly 20% of the student population in UTB”. As for research, UTB only had 24 publications in 2013 and as of last year, the University had 139 Scopus indexed publications and the citations have increased from 38 to 2211 in 2020, added the Dean of GSR.
Briefing sessions by the Graduates Studies and Research Office (GSRO); Bursar’s Office; Student Affairs Office; Information and Communication Technology Centre (ICTC); Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE); and Library were also held. The orientation then ended with a campus tour.
