8 July 2020 – A ‘Vice-Chancellor’s Address’ was organised and made available online to further warm welcome the new student intake for the academic year 2020/2021.
The Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Yang Mulia Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Hj Sulaiman began with welcoming and congratulating the new students on being accepted to further their study at the university.
Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah shared the university’s vision – To become A Global University Impacting Society, where she highlighted on the importance of contributing to the community and how the University has always been responsive to the needs of the community.
“As a student of UTB, you will have ample opportunities to give back to the community via your academic projects as well as through extra-curricular activities” she added.
With all the opportunities of making an impact locally, the Vice-Chancellor urges the students to keep pace of the events in the changing world and be globally competent. The current global world connection due to technology and the Internet requires for a certain knowledge and skills students need to have in the 21st century.
“Investigate the world, weigh your perspectives, communicate your ideas and take action. Take a leap in crossing your borders and boundaries. This does not mean breaking rules but go outside your comfort zone” she mentioned.
Students are encouraged to take the opportunity to learn and acquire new knowledge, develop soft skills, be creative, be innovative, be adaptable and to have intellectual courage within themselves and enhance their personal attributes in profound ways that will equip them for life after University and into the workplace. Within the University, the students can acquire the global experience from ExperiencePLUS and global clubs such as TedX.
Other than making studies as priority, she also encourages the students to look out for matters beyond academic for a memorable time whilst in UTB.
“One way of building your social circle is by participating in the many on-campus clubs and activities.”
In addition, there are various events throughout the year that can make campus life fun such as Club Levels, University Level as well as National Level. She emphasises the importance of attending all national and UTB functions to show their commitment and sense of belonging to UTB by trying to attend the said functions.
“Via these events, this is where you can exercise personal-study-social life balance for a fulfilling University life experience” said the Vice-Chancellor.
The Vice-Chancellor continued the address about adjusting life to the new normal,
“I urge all students to follow all the guidelines and procedures provided by our Business Continuity Plan (BCP) team, in ensuring safety across all our UTB community. Ensure upon entering and exiting the University’s premises, to get your body temperature check, and scan the codes with BruHealth application. While on campus, maintain physical distancing of at least 1.0 metre with each other, adopt the correct coughing and sneezing etiquette, and ensure personal and hand hygiene at all times.”
The Vice-Chancellor later concluded her address by thanking the Dean and staff of Student Affairs Office; President and Members of UTB Student Representative Council; and the Director of ICTC for their hard work to ensure the success of the orientation week to be conducted online.
