19 September 2019 – In conjunction with the 6th Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) Convocation Festival 2019, Work Abroad Career Talk 2019 entitled Making the Cut: Why international experiences are the way forward was held at the Lecture Theatre 2, Library Complex, UTB. The UTB Career Guidance Unit of the Student Affairs Office hosted the talk.
About 77 graduates and final year students from UTB attended the talk. Present at the event were His Excellency Mr. Richard Lindsay, British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam, who is also one of the main speakers of the event; and Yang Mulia Awang Haji Ady Syarmin bin Hj Md Taib, Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB. Also attending the talk were other invited speakers, organisations; Principal Officers; staff and students of UTB.
The event began with the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat followed by a welcoming speech by the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB and a multimedia presentation by the UTB alumni who underwent their internship programme at Piper Aircraft, Florida under UTB Experience PLUS in collaboration with Piper Aircraft Inc.
His Excellency Mr. Richard Lindsay delivered a talk entitled “Working with a Global Mindset”; followed by Yang Mulia Dr. Daniel Lee, the Public Affairs Officer of the United States Embassy as the second speaker; Dr. Anil Pathak, Senior Assistant Professor from Centre for Communication, Teaching and Learning (CCTL), UTB also gave a talk entitled “Some Die-Hard Career Roles”.
The speakers focused on the need for the students to be open-minded in their considerations for career prospects to not only focus on local job markets; sharing job opportunities available outside the country; international internships and placements; possibilities of expanding the students’ professional networks worldwide and sharing tips to equip students in facing job-seeking challenges.
About seven organisations from various agencies which include Deloitte & Touche; InTurn; Kemuda Institute; Kolej International Graduate Studies (IGS); and Nextacloud Technologies Sendirian Berhad exhibited at the event and also talks were delivered from Schlumberger and Radio Television Brunei (RTB).
