16 September 2019 – Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), under the School of Computing and Informatics (SCI) is the university partner for ASEAN Data Science Explorers (ADSE) Competition 2019, jointly organised by Systems, Applications, and Products in Data Processing (SAP) and ASEAN Foundation. The National Finals for Brunei Darussalam this year was held at the Lecture Theatre 2, Library Complex, UTB. This is the second year the competition being held in the country.
Team PoliGen35, with the topic on ‘The Effects of Obesity Towards the Economy of ASEAN Countries’ emerged as the winner for the National Finals in Brunei. The winning team received cash prize of USD$800 and will be representing the country to compete in the Regional Finals from 8-10 October 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Five teams from various Higher Education institutions in the country competed in the National Finals today. The finalists include Team Zeus, and Zeal from Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD); Team PoliGen35 from Politeknik Brunei (PB); and Team BruNASH2035, and Subtle Sustainability from UTB.
Team BruNASH2035, who presented about ‘The Villain behind Carbon Footprint’ won USD$400 as the runner-up and as for third place went to team Zeal with the topic on ‘Sustainable Environment for ASEAN’ received USD$200.
Present as the Guest of Honour was the Acting Vice-Chancellor of UTB, Yang Mulia Awang Haji Ady Syarmin bin Hj Md Taib. Also at the event were Yang Mulia Mr. Ilan Asqolani, Senior Project Officer for ASEAN Foundation-SAP Joint Initiatives and Yang Mulia Mr. Avinash Jalan, Vice President, Value Engineering from SAP Southeast Asia delivering their remarks as well as a remark from the Guest of Honour.
At the event, the teams were given 10 minutes of presentation time followed by question and answers session. By the end of the competition, the teams were evaluated by the panel of judges from Ministry of Energy, Manpower and Industry (MEMI), Yang Mulia Hajah Siti Hasfah binti Haji Abdul Hamid, Head of International Affairs; Youth Against Poverty, Yang Mulia Mr. Zulkarnain Juata, Assistant Director; Sustainable Development & Environment Protection, Yang Mulia Dayang Nazurah binti Mohd Noor, Conservation Programme Manager; and Mr. Avinash Jalan represent SAP from Southeast Asia.
The ADSE competition is a data analytics competition that aims to enhance awareness and appreciation of the ASEAN community amongst ASEAN youths. Carrying the theme “Today’s youth for Tomorrow’s World” will allow all ASEAN youths to play a key role in tackling today’s social issues facing the region and help create positive change for a better future.
By using SAP Analytic Cloud tool, the teams have worked over the past few months to deliver data-driven insights across six United Nation Sustainable Development Goals which is Good Health and Well Being; Quality Education; Gender Equality; Decent Work and Economic Growth; Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; and Sustainable cities and communities.
