UTB student represents Brunei in 7th Model ASEM
4th July 2016 – A student from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) will depart for Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia today to participate in a youth conference and political simulation of the actual Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Summit from 6 - 10 July 2016.
Nurhazirah Johari will represent Brunei, joining 150 participants from 51 Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) countries. In Ulaanbaatar, the participants will visit the Diplomatic Missions of ASEM countries, participate in plenary sessions, working groups, and practical trainings. In the first phase of the programme, an online pre-event phase was conducted where selected participants joined online pre-conference research and training modules which included individual tasks, exercise, case studies and team work.
The second phase of the programme will be the conference, where participants will develop the Chair's Statement of the 7th Model ASEM.
In the third and final phase, four student participants will present the Chair’s Statement of the 7th Model ASEM to the ASEM Leaders and officials attending the ASEM11. A number of participating students will also have the chance to meet their Heads of States on the sidelines of the ASEM11.
Through role-play, research, case-studies and practical trainings, students will enhance their diplomacy, negotiation, consensus-building and public-speaking skills. Nurhazirah is a Mechanical Engineering undergraduate of UTB and also a member of the University's Student Representative Council. She has previously participated participant in conferences and debate championships such as the Borneo British Parliamentary Championship in Malaysia, the Model UN in BGIC Global Issue Conference in 2009, and the AKFF ASEAN-ROK Frontier Forum in 2014 in Seoul, Korea. Nurhazirah also represented Brunei Darussalam in multiple exchange programmes such as the TSS Total Summer School in Paris in July 2014, and Jenesys 2.0 Japan in July 2013.
