7 August 2018 – A group of academics from Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) and Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) attended the second joint symposium of Osaka University (OU) with Higher Educational Institutions of Brunei Darussalam at Osaka University, Osaka. The group was led by UTB Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman. The theme for this year’s symposium is ‘Innovation in Science and Technology’. The First Joint Symposium was held on 21 February 2018.
The symposium began with welcoming address by Professor Kawahara Genta, Executive Vice President of Global Engagement and Student Support at Osaka University. This was then followed by a plenary address by UTB Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. Dayang Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman. Also present were Mrs Hajah Normah Suria Hayati Pehin Dato Hj Jamil, Collaborative Professor, Osaka University, and Prof Kazumasa Hirata of Osaka University.
The symposium was divided into three scientific sessions. The first session focused on the area of Bioresource and Biodiversity (BB) facilitated by Professor Kazumasa Hirata. The speakers were Mrs Hajah Normah Suria Hayati Pehin Dato Hj Jamil, Professor Masayoshi Arai from OU; Dr. Aida Maryam Haji Basri from UTB; Dr Fairuzeta binti Hj Muhd Ja’afar from UBD; Associate Professor Dr Kazuo Harada from OU and Dr. Naoki Ichiyanagi, visiting Associate Professor from Collaborative Laboratory of Saraya Co. Ltd., OU.
The second session was on Nano Technology and Advanced Materials (NAM) facilitated by Professor Eiichi Tamiya, OU. In this session, the speakers include Professor Dr. Yasushu Inoue from Photonics Center, OU; Dr. Maziyar Sabet from UTB; Dr. Mohammad Hilni Harun Sani from UBD and Dr. Fumitaka Fujita, Visiting Associate Professor from the Collaborative Laboratory of Mandam Co. Ltd. OU.
The final session of the joint symposium was on Halal Science and Technology (HST) facilitated by Professor Quamrul Hasan from OU. The speakers of this session include Associate Professor Nurdeng Deuraseh from Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA); Dr. Syazana Abdullah Lim from UTB and Dr. Lim Lee Hoon from UBD.
All the three sessions resulted in fruitful discussions and with potential collaborative activities between Institutions of Higher Learning in Brunei and Osaka University.
