University life begins for 446 new students at the Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) today as the new batch of student intake for the academic year 2017/2018 gathered to enroll at the University’s campus. The enrolment session marks the start of a six-day orientation programme starting from 24 to 29 July 2017. It was designed for the new students to familiarize themselves with campus life, and meeting new people at the University. The 2017/2018 intake is made up of over 400 students undertaking undergraduate degree programmes, as well as 94 postgraduate degree programmes.
During the orientation, the new students will have the opportunity to meet with their programme lecturers and gain further insights on the academic programme that they will be pursuing. The students will also be given a tour around the campus, and be familiarized with the support services and facilities that are available at the University. The orientation week is jointly organised by the Offices of the Registrar Office, Student Affairs and the Student Representative Council of UTB (Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar).
Also during the orientation, the students will get to know each other and meet with members of the UTB Student Representative Council, a vibrant and active student body at the University. They will also be participating in a number of interactive activities lined up throughout the week and also attending talks on topics that include motivational, counselling, religious, and MIB. Guest speakers from the Attorney General Chambers, and the Information Department will also conduct talks on ‘Cybercrime and the Risks and Dangers of Social Media', and ‘Melayu Islam Beraja: Kekitaan’ respectively. The highlight of the Orientation Programme will be the Vice-Chancellor’s Address, which will be held on the second day of the Orientation Programme, 25 July 2017.
This year marks the first batch of students enrolled in the Newly offerd Undergratuate degree programmes, Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Applied Mathematics and Economics; Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Food Science and Technology; and Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computing with Data Analytics offered by the School of Applied Science and Mathematics and School of Computing and Informatics respectively.
UTB currently offers 21 undergraduate degrees, 5 Taught Masters, Masters by Research, and PhD programmes in the fields of Engineering, Business, Computing and Informatics. UTB prides itself in delivering industry-relevant and hands-on academic programmes that can produce marketable graduates that meet the needs of the nation and its industries.
The Orientation Week will end with a cycling and walkathon event at the Bandarku Ceria in Bandar Seri Begawan.
