Institut Pengajian Tinggi (IPT) Cycling Team Joins SKBD 2017

UTB and UBD Cyclists represent IPT in Brunei Darussalam National Sports Fiesta 2017

The Institut Pengajian Tinggi (IPT) Cycling Team was launched on 22 March 2017 by the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz, and the Vice-Chancellor of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman.

The cycling team is comprised of staff and student from both university, and will participate in the cycling event of the Sukan Kebangsaan Brunei Darussalam (SKBD) 2017 that will be held on the 26th and 28th of March 2017. The team will participate in the 55 KM Team Time Trial, and the 34 KM Individual Time Trial.

The IPT Cycling Team includes:

Pengiran Dr Mohammad Iskandar bin Pg Hj Petra; Senior Assistant Professor from UBD
Ampuan Dr Hj Mohamad Asrin bin Ampuan Hj Tengah, Lecturer from UBD
Muhamad Khairul Anwar bin Hj Shahari, Assistant Registrar from UBD
Dr Muhamad Fahmi Adli Bin Ibrahim, Senior Lecturer from UTB
Muhammad Syazwi Azhar bin Muhammad Hairolani, Master student from UTB

The Team Manager, Pg Hj Azhan Bin Pg Hj Ahmad who is also a lecturer from UTB commented “We are trying our best for the race as we know there are stronger team such as teams from Brunei-Muara and Tutong who are favourites to win the race”. Pg Dr Mohammad Iskandar said “SKBD is a special event for us because it unites all the higher education institutions in the country to compete under one team”. The team will utilise the experience of Muhammad Syazwi as he is a former National rider to set the pace making for the race. “I am honoured to be a part of the team which includes my own lecturer, Dr Fahmi Ibrahim, and this is a contribution that I can give to the University” said Muhammad Syazwi.

“Our participation in the SKBD demonstrates that our students can be successful in both academic, and sports. Cycling won’t stop you to excel in academics” his comments echoed by team caption Dr Muhammad Fahmi. He also said that being physically fit will make you mentally fresh which is good for the learning process in the classroom. “Our student has discipline and skills in time management, organizing his time between studies and training. This discipline and set of skills is important for our graduates to acquire and will definitely increase their employability in the job market”

The establishment of the cycling team is significantly important to both universities as it promotes a healthy and active lifestyle. UBD and UTB has regular cycling once a week for one to two hours joined by members of the staff. Recently, UBD, UNISSA and UTB jointly organised the 43KM Varsity Cycle that attracted 200 cyclists. Pg Hj Azhan hopes the team will grow bigger and stronger and able to capture talents from staff and students from the other Higher Education Institutions.
