UTB Faculty of Engineering Receives Boost from Industry Funding

The Faculty of Engineering of Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) today received a corporate donation of B$300,000.00 (Three hundred thousand Brunei Dollars) from Daelim-Swee JV for enhancing the Faculty’s laboratories and resources. The donation is part of the company’s corporate social responsibility. A ceremony for the handover of the cheque was held this afternoon at the Pearl, UTB. The Guest of Honour at the ceremony was Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Suyoi bin Haji Osman, Minister of Education.  The cheque was first presented to the Minister of Education by Awang Ahn Byoung Wook, Project Manager at Daelim Industrial Co., Ltd. and Awang Chua Min Chu, Vice Chairman of SWEE Sdn Bhd. The Minister then handed over the cheque to Professor Dr. Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman, the Vice-Chancellor of UTB.

The Faculty of Engineering is the largest faculty in UTB with a total number of around 840 students and 77 academic staff. The Faculty currently offers seven undergraduate degree programmes and also Masters and PhD programmes in Electrical & Electronic, Mechanical, Civil, and Petroleum & Chemical Engineering disciplines. It has been the main provider of engineering higher education in the country since 1986. The funding will also complement the Faculty’s efforts in acquiring accreditation of all its degree programmes by the respective professional bodies leading to international recognition of the programmes.

Daelim-Swee JV is a joint venture between Korean construction giant Daelim Industrial Co., Ltd. and the local company, Swee Sdn Bhd. The joint venture company was awarded two of the six contract packages of the Temburong Bridge project, namely the CC2 (Marine Viaducts) and CC3 (Navigational Bridges) packages. The joint venture was also responsible for the design and construction of the Sungai Kebun Bridge, which is a 622 metre-long concrete dual carriage way (four lane) cable-stayed bridge with a single tower that connects the Brunei capital with Mukim Lumapas.

Also present at the ceremony were Dr. Haji Azman bin Ahmad, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Higher Education); and other senior officials from the Ministry of Education and UTB.
